Robbery defendant allowed to fire attorney

A man, who is denying a March 27 robbery, successfully fired his attorney on Tuesday.

Daniel Angel DeJesus, 27, entered not guilty pleas to counts of robbery, battery with a deadly weapon with substantial bodily harm, residential burglary and burglary with intent to commit a crime.

In addition to several other allegations, DeJesus claimed attorney Max Stovall didn’t take his innocence seriously.

Stovall denied the allegations.

District Judge Tod Young told DeJesus that he could hire any attorney he liked, as long as he was paying for it.

The judge allowed Stovall to withdraw from the case, but cautioned De Jesus that would be very unlikely to happen again.

He will return to court on Tuesday with a new appointed attorney, where a trial date would be set.

DeJesus is accused of driving two women to a residence off Pinenut Road, where they went into the home. After a period of time, De Jesus allegedly entered the residence with a ball bat which he is accused of hitting the resident with.

The resident then came back with a machete and cut DeJesus in the hand and the trio left.

• A man accused of robbing the COD Casino on July 14 will stick with his appointed attorney, he confirmed at a hearing on Wednesday.

Chase Henderson, 33, and Andrew Toomey, 43, appeared in East Fork Justice Court where both men asked to delay a preliminary hearing that was set for Thursday.

Henderson appeared with attorney Matthew Ence, while Toomey appeared with attorney Max Stovall.

East Fork Justice of the Peace Paul Gilbert set an Aug. 16 status hearing for the men.

The two men were arrested on County Road after Henderson allegedly shot at a deputy who pulled them over after the 5 a.m. robbery.

According to court documents, the pair are accused of entering the casino wearing masks and gloves and rounding up a half dozen employees and customers and locking them into the casino cage.

Bail for Henderson, who has a federal hold on him, was set at $2.5 million, while Toomey’s bail is $1 million. Toomey also has a hold out of Carson City.
